13 travellers missing, nine rescued as sea pirates hijack passenger boat in Rivers

A passenger boat carrying 20 people was attacked by suspected sea pirates along the Bonny-Okrika waterways in Rivers State. The attack happened on Thursday, February 6, 2025, near Isaka in Okrika Local Government Area.

The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Council, Anengi Claude-Wilcox, confirmed the incident in a statement released by his media aide, Boma Waribor.

According to the statement, security agencies rescued nine passengers, while efforts are ongoing to find the remaining 13.

Authorities revealed that the boat driver took a dangerous route, passing through Kilometer 10, which is a restricted area for commercial boats.

“The relatives of the victims and the public are urged to remain calm as we work closely with security agencies and neighboring local governments to resolve the situation,” the statement added.

Security teams are currently searching for the missing passengers and working to prevent further attacks in the area.
