N54.2 trillion budget: Peter Obi questions Tinubu govt on transparency, accountability

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has expressed concerns about the transparency of Nigeria’s 2025 national budget. Recently, President Bola Tinubu announced an increase in the 2025 fiscal year budget, raising it from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion.

However, Obi pointed out that while the increase in revenue sources was explained, there was no clear breakdown of how the extra funds would be spent.

In a statement shared on his social media account, Obi emphasized the importance of showing Nigerians how their money is being used.

He stressed that the government must allocate resources carefully to improve areas like education, healthcare, security, and poverty reduction.

Obi also reminded the public that Nigerians are still waiting for a full report on the 2024 “Renewed Hope” budget, which was passed in December 2023. He urged the National Assembly to demand full details of the budget and make them available to the public.

Transparency and accountability, he said, are essential to ensure the nation’s resources are used wisely for the country’s development and the well-being of its people.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Budget of Restoration, Obi called for a focus on openness and accountability to create a better future for all Nigerians.
