The Nigerian Senate has agreed to President Bola Tinubu’s request to fire three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Sokoto, Abia, and Adamawa states.
These officials—Nura Ali (Sokoto), Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), and Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa)—were suspended by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2023 due to accusations of election misconduct during state elections.
During the Senate’s meeting, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) moved the motion to remove them, referring to Section 157(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) supported the motion, stating that the dismissals would send a strong message against misconduct by public officials.
Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North) confirmed that with 91 senators present, the required two-thirds majority had been reached to approve the request.
The Senate approved the motion through a voice vote, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This decision aims to strengthen the integrity of public office and follow constitutional guidelines.
