Hamas has strongly rejected President Donald Trump’s proposal for the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip and resettle the Palestinian population in other countries.
The controversial idea, announced during a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggested removing over two million Palestinians from Gaza.
The plan included clearing bombs and rubble and redeveloping the area into a luxurious spot dubbed “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
Trump mentioned that the U.S. would take control of Gaza and transform it, claiming support from unnamed Middle Eastern leaders.
However, Egypt and Jordan, two countries proposed as potential places for resettlement, rejected the idea.
Hamas quickly condemned the plan, calling it a “racist” move to eliminate the Palestinian cause. Netanyahu supported Trump’s proposal, calling it a “bold plan” that could change history, and expressed confidence about improving relations with Saudi Arabia, despite the country’s refusal to establish ties with Israel without a Palestinian state.
The proposal has faced widespread criticism. Palestinian officials and citizens in Gaza have firmly rejected it, emphasizing that their homeland is non-negotiable.
Many Palestinians see it as a repeat of the 1948 “Nakba,” when hundreds of thousands were displaced during Israel’s formation.
The plan has also drawn backlash from Egypt, Jordan, and Qatar, and even speculation about the involvement of U.S. troops has raised further concerns.
The ongoing Gaza war, sparked by Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023, has already caused significant loss of life and damage, leading many to doubt the feasibility of Trump’s proposal.
