Elon Musk says he and Trump are shutting down USAID

Elon Musk has announced that he and former President Donald Trump are working together to shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Musk, who leads Trump’s government efficiency initiative, made the statement on his social media platform, X.

“We’re shutting it down,” Musk said. He added that they are currently in the process of ending the agency. According to Musk, this decision has the full support of President Trump, and the two have had several conversations about it. Musk even double-checked with Trump to make sure he was sure about the move, and Trump confirmed his support.

Trump has criticized USAID, calling it “run by a bunch of radical lunatics,” but did not explicitly state that he planned to shut it down without Congress’s approval. The former president has previously discussed placing USAID under the State Department’s authority, though this proposal has raised concerns. Some lawmakers and legal experts argue that it would go against laws created by Congress when USAID was established.

USAID, which was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, is responsible for handling U.S. foreign aid and international charity programs. For the 2023 fiscal year, USAID had a budget of around $40 billion, which Congress allocates annually.

This move has sparked discussions about the future of U.S. foreign assistance and what impact it will have on global aid programs.
