The Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association (PETROAN) has confirmed that fuel lifting has begun at both the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. According to PETROAN spokesperson Joseph Obele, members have started loading various petroleum products, including dual-purpose kerosene, automotive gas oil, and premium motor spirits.
This update comes after reports of a shutdown at the Port Harcourt refinery in December 2024, following its rehabilitation in November. Similarly, the Warri refinery resumed operations on December 30, 2024, after a period of inactivity.
Now, the refineries are back in action, with the Port Harcourt refinery selling petrol, diesel, and kerosene to retailers. The Warri refinery is focusing on supplying diesel and kerosene.
The return of these refineries to full operation, along with the existing Dangote Refinery, has led to expectations of reduced fuel prices in the country. The increased competition between these refineries is seen as a key factor in potentially lowering petrol prices. Additionally, this development is helping to eliminate adulterated diesel and kerosene from the market, which is a positive change for consumers.
Currently, Nigerians are paying between N965 and N1,100 per litre for fuel, but the resurgence of these refineries has raised hopes that prices may soon decrease.
