In a military world traditionally dominated by men, Amanda Azubuike has broken barriers. At the age of 57, she made history as the first Nigerian female to achieve the rank of Brigadier General in the US Army. Her journey continues to inspire women, particularly black women, in the armed forces.

Amanda Azubuike was born in London to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent and a Zimbabwean mother. Her father moved from Nigeria to the UK to study law, where he met her mother, a nursing student. After her parents’ marriage ended, Amanda’s mother moved with her and her sister to the United States. She became a US citizen in 1989.

Amanda’s passion for the military began early. She joined the Air Force Junior ROTC at 17 during her time at Jacksonville High School, a program focused on citizenship training and aerospace science. She graduated from the University of Central Arkansas in 1993 with a degree in Communications and joined the Army in 1994, starting her military career as an aviator. A year later, she completed flight school and became a UH-1 pilot.

Azubuike’s military career spans over three decades. She served in numerous strategic and leadership positions, ranging from intelligence to public affairs. Some of her most notable roles include serving as Deputy Commanding Officer at the US Army Cadet Command, Chief of Public Affairs for the US Southern Command, and Senior Military Advisor at the Pentagon.

Her dedication and hard work culminated in her becoming the first Nigerian female to rise to the rank of Brigadier General in the US Army—a remarkable achievement that serves as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished with perseverance and leadership.
