The Federal Government of Nigeria has donated N30 million to the family of the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, the man who designed the country’s national flag. This financial support is a way of appreciating his contribution to Nigeria’s identity.
Taiwo Akinkunmi was the creative mind behind the Nigerian flag. He designed the flag in 1959, and it was officially adopted on October 1, 1960, when Nigeria gained independence. His work remains a powerful symbol of the nation.
Akinkunmi passed away on August 30, 2023, at the age of 87, after a brief illness. His family had hoped for a state burial, as promised by the government. However, after waiting for a year, he was finally buried on September 6, 2024.
On Thursday, January 25, 2025, officials from the National Orientation Agency (NOA) visited his home in Elebu, Ibadan, to present a cheque of N30 million to his family. The team was led by NOA’s Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, and Oyo State Director, Olukemi Afolayan.
According to Issa-Onilu, the donation was a way to support Akinkunmi’s family and recognize his lasting contribution to the nation.
Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, one of the late designer’s sons, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the financial support. He appreciated the government’s effort in remembering and honoring his father’s legacy.
