A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eddy Olafeso, has urged the party to form an alliance with Peter Obi and other opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections. He believes this is the only way to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Peter Obi, a former Anambra State Governor, left the PDP before the 2023 elections and joined the Labour Party. He contested the presidential election under Labour Party and secured over six million votes, finishing third. However, many of his supporters believe he was denied victory due to electoral malpractice.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Olafeso said PDP must reach out to influential figures like Obi to have a chance in 2027. According to him, “Not only Peter Obi, every person that is somebody in this country that can actually garner one or two votes must be spoken with.”
He explained that forming political alliances is a common practice globally and cited Ghana as an example. He warned that no single party can defeat the APC alone.
Olafeso also blamed PDP’s leadership for the divisions within the party before the 2023 elections. He believes that if Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi had worked together, their combined votes could have pushed APC’s candidate, Bola Tinubu, into second place.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, Olafeso’s call for opposition unity highlights the need for strategic partnerships. If the PDP and other opposition parties want to defeat the APC, they must come together and present a strong front. The coming years will determine whether they can unite for a common goal.
