Trump halts HIV funding for Nigeria and other developing countries

The US government has paused its support for HIV treatment in Nigeria and other developing nations. This decision comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office, directing a temporary freeze on foreign aid programs.

This halt directly affects PEPFAR, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, a global health initiative that provides HIV treatment and care. With a yearly budget of $6.5 billion, PEPFAR has helped over 20.6 million people worldwide and is credited with saving an estimated 26 million lives since it began. However, the funding freeze will last for at least 90 days, with US officials stating that future funds will only be distributed if they benefit Americans in return.

In Nigeria, where about two million people live with HIV, PEPFAR has been a lifeline, providing access to medication and strengthening healthcare systems. Over the years, Nigeria has received over $6 billion in support from PEPFAR. Without this funding, efforts to fight HIV in the country could face severe challenges, putting millions of lives at risk.

Public health experts worry that this suspension may signal the end of the program altogether. However, some remain hopeful that Marco Rubio, a strong supporter of PEPFAR in the past, might help ensure the program continues in his role as Secretary of State.

The pause in funding raises serious concerns about the future of HIV treatment in developing countries and the global fight against the virus. Millions of lives depend on programs like PEPFAR, and the consequences of this decision could be devastating.
