The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and workers have halted operations at Lagos Television, Eko FM/Radio Lagos, and Lagos Traffic Radio. This protest, held on Monday, was organized to demand the implementation of the N85,000 minimum wage promised by the Lagos State Government.
The workers, supported by the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU), picketed the stations and insisted on being added to the Oracle System for salary payments. Carrying placards with messages such as “Pay us Minimum Wage” and “Give us Oracle,” the workers blocked the Agidingbi complex’s entrance and exit to express their dissatisfaction.
Speaking at the protest, Comrade Funmi Sessi, the Lagos NLC Chairman, stated:
“We started peacefully, and we will end it peacefully. We are simply demanding what is rightfully ours. These workers have been excluded from receiving the new minimum wage, despite the Lagos State Government beginning its implementation in November. This is an injustice, especially during these challenging economic times.”
She explained that the workers had followed due process by notifying the management and giving multiple warnings, including a 21-day notice, but no resolution was reached. She appealed to the Lagos State Governor to intervene and ensure the management fulfills its obligations.
The NLC vowed to continue the protest until the workers receive their minimum wage, arrears, and other benefits they are entitled to.
