Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou, known for his outstanding roles in Hollywood, recently shared that he is still facing financial challenges despite his decades-long career in the film industry.
In an interview with CNN African Voices, the Gladiator star opened up about the difficulties he continues to experience. “I’m still finding it hard to make a living. I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades, with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, yet I’m still struggling to make ends meet. I’m definitely underpaid,” he said.
Hounsou also shed light on the persistent issue of racism in Hollywood, which has impacted his career. He stated, “I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars, thinking I had just come off the boat and the streets. Even though I accomplished that, they didn’t see me as an actor deserving of respect.”
The actor emphasized that Hollywood’s push for diversity has not yet created a fair system. “This conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism won’t change overnight,” he added.
Despite his incredible talent and recognition through major award nominations, Hounsou’s experience highlights the ongoing struggles many actors face in Hollywood due to inequality and systemic issues.
