Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost Igbo socio-cultural organization, has called on the Nigerian government to include ethnicity and religion in the 2025 National Population Census. The group believes that this will ensure accurate demographic data that reflects the country’s true diversity and helps address historical imbalances among ethnic groups.
In a statement by its factional Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze emphasized that including ethnicity and religion is not just a statistical exercise but a necessary step toward fairness. According to the group, previous censuses failed to represent ethnic populations accurately, leading to disputes and distrust.
“The 2025 census must capture the rich diversity of Nigeria. This will help minimize conflicts over skewed demographic portrayals and ensure justice for all ethnic groups, including the Igbo,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze also urged Igbo investors to embrace economic opportunities offered by President Bola Tinubu’s proposed Tax Reforms Bill. The group encouraged Igbos to focus on creating an international economic hub in the Southeast.
“This is a chance to redirect our investments back home. We must revitalize our local economies and build a sustainable future for the Igbo Nation,” said Isiguzoro.
Reiterating its commitment to Igbo rights, Ohanaeze called for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The group also criticized attempts by certain Southeast governors to impose a President-General in the upcoming Ohanaeze elections.
“This political interference threatens the core values of Igbo identity. We will resist any actions that undermine our heritage and aspirations,” Ohanaeze stated.
Ohanaeze commended President Tinubu for recognizing Nigeria’s ethnic diversity through the establishment of Development Commissions for the six geopolitical zones. They, however, stressed that true progress relies on an inclusive and transparent census.
The group remains steadfast in its mission to promote Igbo culture, foster economic growth, and advocate for fairness and inclusion in national policies.
The 2025 census offers a critical opportunity to reflect Nigeria’s diversity and address long-standing inequalities. For Ohanaeze, the inclusion of ethnicity and religion is non-negotiable, as it will ensure accurate representation and foster unity among the nation’s diverse communities.
