Ogun security guards set man ablaze after mistaking him for a thief

A tragic incident unfolded in the Agura Sabo area of Sagamu, Ogun State, where two security guards mistakenly set a man on fire, believing he was a thief.

The victim, Basiru Aliu, a 44-year-old man, was helping his employer, Fatai Ifekoya, move belongings from his former home to a new residence in Ijokun around 7 a.m. on Monday. While he was performing his task, the guards, Segun Sodiya and Segun Abatan, attacked him, suspecting he was stealing.

According to the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the guards poured a flammable substance on Aliu and set him ablaze. Police officers from the Division Crime Office responded quickly and rescued the victim, who is now receiving treatment at the Royal Cottage Hospital in Agura Sabo. Reports indicate that he is recovering well.

The security guards have been arrested and are in police custody. They will face attempted murder charges after investigations by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Abeokuta are completed.

Omolola Odutola urged the public to report suspicious activities to the police instead of resorting to violence or taking the law into their own hands. This, she said, would help prevent unnecessary tragedies and ensure justice is properly served.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder to communities to prioritize proper communication and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
