The Nigerian government has taken a significant step by submitting the necessary documents to the Finnish government, requesting the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafra activist. This was revealed by General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, during a television interview.
General Musa confirmed that Ekpa is in custody and assured Nigerians that the legal process is underway. He stated, “The Federal Government has provided most of the required documentation to Finland, and I’m confident the right steps will be taken.”
Simon Ekpa was arrested in Finland in November 2024, along with four others, over allegations of terror-related activities. Finnish authorities accused him of inciting violence, promoting separatist propaganda, and financing terrorism.
The Lahti District Court in Finland ordered his detention on charges of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent in Nigeria. Authorities claim that Ekpa used social media to spread separatist messages and advocate for violent secession in southeastern Nigeria.
This development highlights Nigeria’s efforts to address security challenges and ensure accountability for those involved in acts of violence and terrorism. The extradition process will determine the next steps in handling this case.
