Rufai Oseni, a well-known Nigerian on-air personality, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent media chat, expressing disappointment in the President’s understanding of the issues affecting Nigeria. Speaking on The Morning Show, Oseni said he was concerned after watching the chat, noting that Tinubu seems to lack a complete understanding of the country’s challenges.
Oseni pointed out that despite implementing policies that have negatively impacted Nigerians, President Tinubu waited 18 months to directly address the nation. “After that media chat, I am more worried for Nigeria. President Tinubu disappointed me. He doesn’t have a full understanding of the issues,” Oseni said.
One major issue Oseni raised was the removal of fuel subsidies. He said the President’s claim that there was no alternative to subsidy removal ignored the fact that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was still paying subsidies at the beginning of the year. He also criticized Tinubu for not addressing the inflation and currency devaluation that followed the subsidy removal.
When asked about his plans to fight inflation, Tinubu mentioned boosting agricultural production but seemed to forget his earlier promise to cultivate 10 million hectares of land. Oseni noted that while there had been some improvements in agriculture, food prices remain high. He also expressed concern that the President’s plans for agricultural reforms seemed unclear and lacked detail.
Since taking office in May 2023, President Tinubu has introduced economic policies such as canceling petrol subsidies, floating the naira, and increasing electricity tariffs. These changes have led to one of the most severe cost-of-living crises Nigeria has seen in years.
