Activist lawyer Dele Farotimi has been released from prison after fulfilling the court’s bail requirements. His release comes as a relief to his supporters following his earlier arrest over allegations of defamation.
Farotimi, who met the bail conditions on Tuesday, is now free and has left the Ekiti State prison. The news of his release was shared by activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, who confirmed that Farotimi is on his way back home to Lagos.
Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Sowore expressed his joy, saying, “Dele Farotimi is no longer in Ekiti prison and is now heading home to Lagos. The struggle continues!” This statement reflects the continued advocacy and activism of Farotimi and his supporters.
Earlier this month, a Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti granted Farotimi bail set at N30 million. His legal troubles began with accusations of defaming Afe Babalola, a respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
Farotimi, who was held in a correctional center in Ado Ekiti, appeared in court under heavy security last Friday. The case has drawn public attention due to the high-profile nature of the allegations and the personalities involved.
While Farotimi regains his freedom, the legal battle is far from over. The case highlights issues of free speech and accountability within Nigeria’s legal and social frameworks.
