Sanwo-Olu, Egbetokun Perform Groundbreaking For New Police Quarters At Ijeh

In a historic move to improve the welfare of police officers in Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, have initiated the construction of 2,200 modern housing units at the Ijeh Police Barracks in Ikoyi. This development signifies a strong commitment to addressing long-standing challenges in police welfare and enhancing security in the state.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the Ijeh Barracks in Obalende, marked the start of a project aimed at transforming the living conditions of police personnel. Over the years, the barracks have faced severe infrastructure challenges, including building collapses. This new initiative replaces outdated facilities with modern, well-equipped housing designed to boost the morale and productivity of officers.

The project is a partnership between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force Property Development Company (NPF-PDCC). It includes a mix of residential and commercial units such as one to four-bedroom apartments, maisonettes, and townhouses, all featuring modern amenities tailored to the needs of the resident.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of prioritizing the welfare of police officers, noting that well-supported officers are better positioned to serve and protect citizens. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to the safety and security of Lagos residents, stating that this project is part of broader efforts to create a safer Lagos.

IGP Egbetokun praised the initiative, commending the Lagos State Government for its partnership and support. He pointed out that this project is not only about providing housing but also about restoring dignity to police personnel. The IGP also assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force would ensure close supervision of the project to guarantee its completion within two years.

The ceremony also featured a Lagos State Security Town Hall meeting, where Governor Sanwo-Olu and IGP Egbetokun unveiled a series of operational assets donated by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund. These included over 260 patrol vehicles, ballistic helmets, bulletproof vests, and other critical resources to enhance police operations.

This investment underscores Lagos State’s focus on improving security infrastructure and empowering the police force with the tools they need to maintain law and order effectively.

The housing project at Ijeh Police Barracks is part of a larger vision to upgrade police barracks across major cities in Nigeria. This initiative sets a new standard for collaboration between the government and the police force in addressing the welfare needs of security personnel.

Governor Sanwo-Olu and IGP Egbetokun’s leadership in this endeavor serves as a model for other states, showing how targeted investments in police welfare can create a ripple effect, leading to safer communities and stronger public trust in law enforcement.

With construction expected to be completed in two years, Lagos residents can look forward to seeing this project transform the lives of police officers, paving the way for enhanced public safety and security across the state.
