Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, had dinner with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on December 18. This was the first time the billionaire met with Trump after the Republican leader secured re-election.
Reports suggest that Bezos, like other tech leaders, is looking to strengthen ties with Trump before his inauguration. Last week, Trump confirmed that Bezos would visit his Florida estate. According to the Wall Street Journal, Bezos has committed to donating $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund.
The relationship between Trump and Bezos has not always been smooth. However, it appears to be improving, especially after the Washington Post, owned by Bezos, chose not to endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election, a departure from its usual support for Democratic candidates.
At the New York Times DealBook Summit earlier this month, Bezos expressed hope for Trump’s second term, particularly regarding deregulation. “He seems to have a lot of energy around reducing regulation. If I can help do that, I’m going to help him,” Bezos said.
Trump has also shown an eagerness to reconnect with business leaders ahead of his second term. He recently stated, “I want to get ideas from them. Look, we want them to do well.”
Several other tech executives have shown similar interest in working with Trump. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew are both planning $1 million donations to Trump’s inaugural fund. Mark Zuckerberg of Meta also met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, and Elon Musk has been actively supporting Republican efforts to limit government spending.
As Trump prepares for his second term, his relationships with top tech leaders appear to be warming up, signaling a potential shift in cooperation between business and politics.
