Delta State Governor, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, has strongly criticized the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as “pathways to poverty” for Nigerians. In a recent statement, Governor Oborevwori blamed the APC-led government’s economic measures, particularly the removal of the petroleum subsidy and the floating of the Naira, for the severe hunger, poverty, and unemployment plaguing the country.
Oborevwori argued that while these policies might have had some potential benefits, they have been overshadowed by soaring inflation and the devaluation of the Naira. He believes the economic hardship Nigerians are facing outweighs any supposed advantages.
His criticism came in response to remarks made by former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who praised Tinubu’s economic strategies during an APC event. Omo-Agege also accused Governor Oborevwori of mismanaging Delta State’s finances, despite the significant federal funds allocated to the state.
In his rebuttal, Governor Oborevwori questioned how the increased federal allocations could help the state when inflation is high, and poverty continues to rise. He pointed to reports from international organizations like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which have criticized the failure of Tinubu’s policies. These organizations have highlighted that Nigeria is now the poverty capital of the world, with more than 130 million people living below the poverty line.
Oborevwori also dismissed Omo-Agege’s praise for the APC government, saying, “Is this the model that Omo-Agege is recommending for Delta to copy? A model that has unleashed economic hardship on the people?” The governor concluded by stating that Delta State would not adopt the economic model pursued by the APC, which he believes has only deepened the suffering of Nigerians.
