Aisha Yesufu, a Nigerian activist, has called on Kemi Badenoch, the British-Nigerian politician, to stop focusing on Nigeria when discussing her views on the UK. Badenoch’s recent remarks have stirred controversy, especially after she spoke negatively about her experiences with the Nigerian police.
In an interview with a British journalist, Badenoch was asked if she trusted the British police. She responded by saying her experience with the Nigeria Police Force was very negative, mentioning an incident where they allegedly stole her brother’s shoe and watch. She contrasted this with her positive experience with the British police but did not provide further details on the Nigerian incident.
Aisha Yesufu, who shared the interview on social media, quickly criticized Badenoch for bringing up Nigeria when the question was about the British police. Yesufu questioned why Badenoch mentioned Nigeria’s police, emphasizing that the original question was about trust in the British police. She also pointed out that there was no need to bring up Nigeria’s poverty in the conversation.
Yesufu further argued that the challenges in Nigeria should not lower the standards expected from the British police. She said, “If the UK doesn’t provide the environment for people to loot Nigeria’s wealth and take it there, Nigeria’s poverty wouldn’t even come up in discussions like this.”
Lastly, Yesufu called on the Nigerian police to improve its performance, stating that they often cause embarrassment for the country.
This back-and-forth between Yesufu and Badenoch highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the perceptions of Nigeria’s issues in international conversations.
