Dele Farotimi, a well-known human rights lawyer and activist, was in court today, December 10, for his defamation trial. The case took place at the Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The charges were filed by Chief Afe Babalola SAN, a respected legal figure, who claims that parts of Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, are defamatory. In the book, Farotimi alleged that Babalola influenced Supreme Court judges, a claim that led to the lawsuit.
After his arraignment last week, Farotimi was sent to the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre. Today, he was brought to court by prison officials to face trial. The case has gained significant attention due to the allegations and the high-profile individuals involved.
This trial raises important questions about freedom of expression, accountability, and the limits of defamation in Nigeria’s legal system.
