Senate Forms Committee to Review Tax Reform Bills

The Nigerian Senate has created a committee to review tax reform bills sent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) leads the team, which is expected to identify and resolve issues within the proposed reforms before public hearings are held.

During the plenary session on Wednesday, Deputy Senate President Barau I Jibrin (APC, Kano North) announced the formation of the committee. He explained that the group will consult with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the executive arm, and other key stakeholders to address controversies surrounding the bills.

President Tinubu submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024. These bills aim to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal institutions and align with the administration’s broader development plans. Despite these goals, the reforms have faced opposition from various groups, including governors, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and some lawmakers.

Members of the committee include Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orjir Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaha (Kebbi North). The committee’s work will focus on ensuring the proposed reforms address all concerns before further action is taken.
