Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has voiced strong opposition to the controversial tax reform bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu. Zulum believes that if the bills are passed by the National Assembly, they will benefit only a few states, particularly Lagos and Rivers, while other states will be left at a disadvantage.
Speaking on Channels Television on December 1, Zulum explained that the proposed tax reforms would mainly favor Lagos, making it the biggest beneficiary. He expressed concerns that this would create an unfair system where only a few states receive the benefits of the policy.
Zulum also reflected on his stance before the 2023 general elections, where he was one of the few governors advocating for power to be rotated to the southern part of the country. However, he emphasized that the northern region cannot oppose President Tinubu, as more than 60% of Tinubu’s votes came from Northern Nigeria in the 2023 elections.
The governor also responded to claims suggesting that the North is against Tinubu’s government, saying this negative narrative is unfounded and does not reflect the political reality of the situation.
