A devastating boat accident has left families mourning in Niger State. The incident happened on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at around 2:00 am, between Baro and Akwanu communities in the Agaie Local Government Area.
The boat, carrying almost 50 passengers, was traveling from Ebe Community in Kogi State to Katcha market when it capsized. According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the accident resulted in 22 fatalities, while eight passengers were rescued alive.
NSEMA’s Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, shared that the rescue operations are being coordinated in collaboration with the Agaie Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and community volunteers. So far, 22 bodies have been recovered, with 18 victims from Kogi State and four from the Akwanu community in Niger State.
Efforts are still underway to find more survivors. The swift response from community volunteers and emergency workers has been commendable, but the incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers associated with water transportation in the region.
As search and rescue operations continue, families of the victims are left grappling with an immense loss, and the community is rallying together to support them during this difficult time.
