Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term, which will begin on September 1, 2025. The World Trade Organization made the announcement on Friday, sharing the news through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Okonjo-Iweala, who was the former Nigerian Minister of Finance, made history when she first took office as the seventh Director-General on March 1, 2021. She became the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO. Her leadership has been praised for focusing on making global trade fairer and more inclusive, especially for developing countries.
Her reappointment shows the WTO’s continued confidence in her ability to steer global trade toward greater cooperation and growth. Okonjo-Iweala’s work at the WTO has already made a lasting impact, and her second term is expected to continue her mission of promoting inclusive trade policies.
Congratulations to her!
