A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Manchester for filming and sharing videos of women without their consent. The man, from Bradford, was taken into custody on suspicion of stalking and harassment after reports surfaced of women being followed, filmed, and harassed during nights out in Manchester city center.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) started an investigation after receiving complaints from women who felt unsafe. Officers uncovered video content, hidden behind a paywall, which included suspected upskirting and non-consensual nudity. The videos, shared on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, gained millions of views and drew misogynistic comments.
According to GMP, this is believed to be the first arrest in the UK linked to social media videos showing women in vulnerable situations during nights out.
The videos, primarily filmed in the Peter Street and Deansgate areas, created fear among many women. Police urged affected individuals to come forward, leading to numerous reports from women who felt unsafe and harassed.
Chief Inspector Stephen Wiggins acknowledged that public filming is generally legal, but said it becomes a crime when it involves stalking, harassment, or invasive acts like upskirting. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that everyone feels safe while enjoying a night out.
GMP has stepped up patrols in Manchester city center, deploying around 60 officers every Friday and Saturday night. These officers, supported by charities, volunteers, and other partners, work to identify and challenge predatory behavior while safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
With the holiday season approaching, GMP reassured the public that the city remains a safe place to enjoy nightlife and that any behavior threatening public safety will be dealt with swiftly.
Authorities continue to investigate the case and are encouraging anyone affected by the videos to report their concerns.
