Nigerian superstar Davido has stirred controversy following remarks he made during a U.S. radio interview. The singer addressed Africans living abroad, advising them to reconsider returning home due to challenges in Nigeria, particularly its struggling economy.
”Leave America and go where? Go back where? It’s not cool back home. My country now, the economy is in shambles. ’The exchange rate is messed up. A lot of stuff not going well. The economy is not just good anymore. The pil prices are too high. Imagine a country that produces oil. We produce the oil and we paying more money for oil than a country that imports the oil’‘ he said during the interview.
His statements triggered mixed reactions online. Many Nigerians accused him of tarnishing the country’s image, claiming his words discouraged those in the diaspora and portrayed Nigeria negatively. Some critics labeled his comments as “de-marketing” the nation.
Unfazed by the backlash, Davido took to his X handle to respond. He mocked his critics, saying they were upset because he is a “real ambassador” who represents Nigeria positively on the global stage. He also called out TVC, a Nigerian TV station, and humorously praised his accent during the interview.
While his remarks have sparked heated debates, they have also opened up discussions about the state of Nigeria’s economy and the realities faced by its citizens. Whether his comments are seen as honest or damaging, Davido’s boldness continues to draw attention to critical national issues.
