The Ekenobizi community in Umopara, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State is currently deserted after an attack on a Nigerian Army checkpoint by unknown gunmen on Wednesday. The attack resulted in the deaths of several soldiers and has left the community fearful of potential military retaliation.
Many young people in the area fled after the attack, and they have not returned due to concerns that the military might target innocent residents in retaliation. This fear has led to a significant decline in economic activities, including farming and trade, as the community remains on edge.
Governor Alex Otti has condemned the attack and promised to work closely with security agencies to apprehend those responsible. However, local leaders, including former governorship aspirant Lucky Igbokwe, have urged the military to avoid harming innocent civilians in their pursuit of the attackers. Igbokwe described the killings as “barbaric” and called for the use of intelligence gathering rather than forceful invasions.
Enyioma Foundation President, Enyinnaya Duke-Ako Atuloma, also condemned the attack, calling it senseless and destructive. He appealed to the military to handle the situation professionally, ensuring that the community is not further harmed in the search for the perpetrators.
As of now, the Ekenobizi community remains abandoned, with residents hoping for a peaceful resolution that does not bring more suffering to the innocent people living there.
