Biden and Trump Meet at White House to Discuss Transition of Power

On November 13, President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump met at the White House to discuss the peaceful transition of power following Trump’s election win. The meeting lasted nearly two hours, focusing on important topics like national security and Congress’s upcoming priorities. According to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, the discussion was “substantive” and focused on key domestic policy areas.

The meeting began with a handshake, as Biden welcomed Trump, saying, “Welcome back, and we’re looking forward to a smooth transition.” Biden assured Trump that his administration would fully support the president-elect’s needs during this transition period.

Trump expressed his appreciation, acknowledging the challenging nature of politics but commending the effort for a smooth transfer. He remarked, “Politics is tough, but it’s a nice world today,” appreciating Biden’s efforts to make the transition smooth.

This was the first time Biden and Trump had met in person since the presidential debate on June 27. White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients and the incoming Chief of Staff Susie Wiles were also present to assist with the transition planning.

The meeting followed a long-standing American tradition where outgoing presidents meet with their successors to ensure a peaceful and orderly transfer of power. However, in 2020, Trump did not offer the same opportunity to Biden, as he disputed the election results against his Democratic rival.
