Security operatives in Enugu State have successfully neutralized four suspected gunmen, believed to be linked to the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed group, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The operation, carried out by a joint team of the Nigerian Army, Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), resulted in the recovery of firearms and ammunition.
The suspects were intercepted on Wednesday morning in the Eha Alumona area of Nsukka Local Government Area. According to reports, the gunmen were allegedly planning attacks in several parts of Enugu State, including the state capital. Following an intense gun battle, some of the gunmen managed to escape with gunshot wounds into nearby bushes.
One of the suspects, an ESN commander who had been on the run and operating from neighboring states, was captured after hours of firefight. He led the security forces to several hideouts where additional weapons, charms, and other dangerous items were recovered.
Two security personnel sustained minor injuries during the operation, but both are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.
This operation is part of ongoing security reforms under Governor Peter Mbah, who is committed to improving safety across the state. As part of these efforts, Enugu has established a Distress Response Squad (DRS) and a Command and Control Center, along with investing in enhanced surveillance systems to detect and eliminate threats.
