The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has kicked off a nationwide campaign to register the births of children in Nigeria. This important initiative aims to ensure that every child can access essential services like education, healthcare, and social protection.
The NOA Director General, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, shared that the focus of this campaign is on registering children aged 0 to 5 years. As part of this effort, the agency will provide a National Identification Number (NIN) to these children at no cost. This campaign is being carried out in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF.
Issa-Onilu highlighted that birth registration is a fundamental right for every child. It serves as the first legal proof of a child’s existence, safeguarding their rights and helping them access vital services for their growth and future. Accurate birth registration is also critical for national planning, as it provides essential data for improving education, healthcare, and public services.
By registering a child’s birth, families help ensure that their children are recognized by the state, which protects them from abuse and exploitation. Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit the nearest NPC registration center to register their children. The registration process is straightforward and free, requiring only basic documents like an immunization card or an existing birth certificate.
During this campaign, every child aged 0 to 5 years will receive a NIN upon successful birth registration. The NOA urges all parents, guardians, and community leaders to participate in this crucial initiative. Together, we can work to give every child in Nigeria the best possible start in life.
The birth registration drive began in August and will continue until November 2024. Don’t miss this opportunity to ensure that every child in your community is registered and can access the services they need.
