In a heartbreaking incident in Brazil, two influencers drowned after refusing to wear life jackets while on a boat. Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, were found dead after their overcrowded boat sank off a dangerous stretch of coast known as the Devil’s Throat.
The tragedy unfolded after the women attended a yacht party. As they were returning to shore, their boat was swamped by a large wave. Reports indicate that they chose not to wear life jackets because they thought the jackets would ruin their selfies and tanning. Police commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino shared that some influencers believed life jackets would interfere with their social media photos.
The boat’s captain, who survived along with four others, told police he had been ordered to take six influencers back to shore, even though his boat was only designed for five passengers. When the wave hit on September 29, the boat became too heavy to stay afloat and began to sink.
Beatriz’s body was the first to be recovered, and now police are investigating if the deaths were a tragic accident or if negligence played a role. Commissioner Alfino stated that they are looking into whether recklessness contributed to this tragic event.
Aline, who could not swim, had posted pictures of herself in a daring bikini just before the incident. Beatriz was a popular model and CrossFit trainer.
Several survivors shared their terrifying experiences. Vanessa Audrey da Silva managed to grab a life jacket and clung to rocks to stay safe. She recalled, “There was a moment in the water when no one could see anyone. I was fighting for life.” Another survivor, Camila Alves de Carvalho, held onto a life jacket and expressed, “We almost died. I hurt my foot and swallowed a lot of water. We threw ourselves into the rocks.”
This tragedy highlights the critical importance of prioritizing safety over social media appearances. As we navigate our lives on and off social media, we must remember that our well-being should always come first.
