Governor Peter Mbah has officially launched the construction and dualization of the 43.7km Penoks-Abakpa-Ugwogo-Opi-Nsukka Road. The project, which includes the addition of streetlights, is set to be completed within 18 months. This initiative is part of Mbah’s plan to make Enugu State a top destination for investment, business, tourism, and living.
During the launch ceremony held in Opi, which was attended by prominent political figures from the Nsukka Zone, Mbah emphasized that the project will improve safety on the road. By straightening out many dangerous bends, the construction aims to significantly reduce accidents and crime.
Currently, traveling from Enugu to Nsukka can take over an hour. The new project includes a 3.6km stretch from Penoks Junction to the T-Junction flyover, along with a 41km section of the Abakpa Nike-Opi Nsukka Road. Once completed, the travel time is expected to decrease to about 30 minutes, making it easier for residents to live and work in both areas.
Mbah highlighted that his administration is focusing on grassroots development, which will particularly benefit the Enugu North Zone. He shared plans to develop 102 smart schools, 102 healthcare centers, and over 1,000km of roads, with at least 10km of roads planned for each electoral ward.
Igwe Samuel Asadu, the traditional ruler of Edem-Ani and chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, praised Mbah for launching this significant project. He noted that the people of the Nsukka cultural zone had never imagined such an ambitious plan. Asadu expressed gratitude, stating that the community would support Mbah in future elections.
Deputy Speaker Ezeani Ezenta remarked that Mbah has silenced his critics through his actions and has proven his commitment to the people of Nsukka. Former Deputy Governor Chief Okechukwu Itanyi described the project as “gigantic” and a legacy that would open up Nsukka Zone and the entire state to the world.
Other local leaders, including Hon. Jude Asogwa and former state secretaries, also praised the initiative. Hon. Dennis Agbo, representing Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, called the road a transformational project that will enhance commerce, improve transportation, and help combat crime in the region.
This dualization project is a vital step toward modernizing the infrastructure in Enugu State and will undoubtedly bring significant benefits to the community.
