Nigerian Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting Bolt Driver Over Delivery Dispute

In a troubling incident from Abuja, Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives representing the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, has been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command. He is accused of physically assaulting Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, after a dispute regarding a package delivery escalated into violence.

According to the FCT Police Command, the incident occurred on a Sunday when Mr. Abuwatseya arrived at Ikwechegh’s home to deliver a package. Initial reports indicate that a disagreement arose concerning the method of delivery, which led to a heated argument. During this confrontation, it is alleged that Ikwechegh slapped Mr. Abuwatseya and made derogatory comments regarding the Inspector General of Police.

SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police, provided further details in an official statement. The police expressed deep concern over Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude and disrespect towards the police force, highlighting that such behavior is troubling for a public official. The lawmaker allegedly remarked to the driver, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” which demonstrated a clear disregard for law enforcement authority.

The incident has sparked significant public interest and concern. Many citizens are questioning the accountability of public officials, particularly those in positions of power like Ikwechegh. The lawmaker’s behavior raises serious questions about respect for the law and the treatment of individuals in different professions.

Following the altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was taken to the Maitama Police Station, where he reported being treated harshly. He claimed that police officers accused him of instigating a fight with a “senator” and denied him the right to make phone calls. After being detained for a period, the driver was eventually released, but his vehicle remains in police custody, pending further investigation.

Ikwechegh, on the other hand, is undergoing questioning at the same police station. The FCT Police Command has stated that they are taking the matter seriously and conducting a thorough investigation into the events surrounding the incident.
