Policemen Fatally Shoot Musician “Igbo Jah” (Okezie Chikezie Mba) in Enugu

Tragedy struck in Enugu when Okezie Chikezie Mba, a popular Ogene musician known as “Igbo Jah,” was shot dead by officers from the Nigerian Police Force’s anti-cult unit. This incident happened on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters while he was reportedly leaving after a friendly visit.

This shooting comes on the heels of another police-related fatality just two weeks earlier, when a man named Smith Odinaka was shot on the Enugu-Port-Harcourt Expressway. As of now, there has been no accountability for the officers involved in that incident.

Reports indicate that “Igbo Jah” was shot in what has been described as an “accidental discharge” during a performance. A video circulated on social media showed his body lying in a pool of blood, raising alarm and outrage among fans and the community.

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the shooting and stated that the police officer involved has been arrested and detained. According to police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu has reached out to the musician’s family and friends, offering his condolences. He assured them that a full investigation is underway and that any officer found responsible will face appropriate disciplinary action.

Commissioner Uzuegbu emphasized that such incidents are unacceptable and urged those connected to “Igbo Jah” to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigation to ensure that justice is served. This tragic event has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding police conduct and accountability in Nigeria.
