In a recent development, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded Nigeria’s Super Eagles three points and three goals due to the cancellation of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya. This decision comes as a boost for Nigeria’s AFCON journey, enhancing their position at the top of the group.
With CAF’s ruling, the Super Eagles have further solidified their lead, now holding 10 points from four matches. This leaves them comfortably ahead of their closest rival, Benin, by four points. The Nigerian team’s strong position means they’re now just one step away from qualification, with only a draw needed in their upcoming match against Benin in Abidjan to secure their spot in the 2025 AFCON tournament, which Morocco will host in December 2025.
For Libya, this ruling is a setback, as they now remain at the bottom of the group with only one point. To add to their woes, CAF has also imposed a fine on the Libya Football Federation, amounting to $50,000. This fine must be paid within 60 days from the time they are notified, further increasing the pressure on Libya’s footballing body.
CAF’s decision not only impacts the standings in this group but also demonstrates the seriousness with which the federation enforces its regulations. With the Super Eagles now closing in on their AFCON qualification, Nigerian fans have every reason to be hopeful and excited for the upcoming tournament in
Morocco.
