Ahead of the upcoming local government elections, the Kano State Government has put a restriction on movement across the state to ensure the safety of citizens. This measure will be in effect on election day, from midnight to 6 pm, as a precaution to maintain peace and order during the voting process.
The Information Commissioner, Baba Halilu Dantiye, announced the decision on Friday. According to Dantiye, this restriction is necessary to protect lives and property while allowing the elections to proceed smoothly. Essential workers, including election officials, security personnel, and accredited journalists, will be permitted to move around during the restricted hours.
The government is urging citizens to respect the directive and cooperate with security agencies on duty. Citizens are also encouraged to participate in the election peacefully and avoid any actions that may disturb the voting process.
Security measures are in place across Kano’s 44 local government areas, with checkpoints set up to monitor movement and compliance. Authorities have reassured residents that these measures are only temporary and aimed at fostering a secure environment for the election.
Additionally, Prof. Lawal Malumfashi, the chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), confirmed that all preparations for a fair and credible election are complete. He encouraged residents to come out and vote, noting that several political parties, including the Action Alliance, Zenith Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party, are participating in the polls.
With these arrangements, the government and electoral bodies are committed to ensuring that the elections are transparent and secure for all Kano residents.
