Anambra: Criminals Boldly Challenge Soludo, Bring Crime to His Doorstep

Anambra State is facing a serious security crisis as crime rates rise, especially in Awka, the state capital. Criminals have become so bold that they are now operating close to the home of Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo.

In just one week, violent incidents have left over 25 people dead, making residents doubt the effectiveness of the governor’s security measures. Areas like Ifite-Awka, where many students live, have reported a steady increase in robberies and kidnappings.

One shocking event occurred in Nibo, a town near the governor’s residence, where 16 people were killed. This violence has led many to believe that the Soludo administration is unable to control the situation.

Communities like Enugwu-Ukwu and Nawfia are embroiled in conflict over land disputes. A recent clash resulted in several deaths, and community leaders are urging the state government to take action.

Ambassador Elijah Onyeagba, a community leader, expressed his dismay at the ongoing violence and called for immediate government intervention. The leaders from Nawfia condemned the killings and requested a thorough investigation.

Despite promises of impartiality from police officials, no significant actions have been taken, leaving families of victims without answers or support.

On a recent Thursday, Awka experienced a shooting spree that claimed at least seven lives. Witnesses reported that the violence occurred in the student-heavy area of Ifite-Awka, likely linked to cult activities.

Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene where gunmen pursued a vehicle, and when they failed to capture their target, they retaliated by attacking people in the area.

Survivors recounted their harrowing experiences, with some losing friends to the violence. The local vigilante leader in Nibo lamented the inability of security forces to prevent these attacks, especially given that they occurred near multiple police checkpoints.

Residents are concerned about how armed men in unmarked vehicles could evade security checks and carry out such violent acts. Observers have criticized Governor Soludo’s security strategies, noting that the recent spike in violence raises serious doubts about his ability to ensure public safety.

According to police data, Anambra has reported 127 cases of cult-related violence this year alone, resulting in 73 deaths and 45 injuries. Community leaders are demanding decisive actions to prevent further bloodshed.

Many residents have lost faith in the government’s response to these issues, citing previous cases where violence was downplayed or ignored. The ongoing situation in Anambra has left many feeling unsafe and desperate for action from the state government.

While the police have stated they are investigating threats and increasing patrols, the violence continues. Governor Soludo has visited affected communities to express condolences and assure residents that action will be taken against those responsible for the recent attacks. However, many remain skeptical about the effectiveness of these promises.
