Abia Pensioners Claim Governor Otti Is Not Keeping His Campaign Promises

Pensioners in Abia State are expressing their growing frustration over what they see as a betrayal by Governor Alex Otti regarding his campaign promises on pension payments. The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) has taken a strong stance, accusing the governor of failing to address longstanding issues of unpaid pensions and gratuities that have left many retirees struggling.

During a press briefing held in Umuahia, the NUP leadership voiced their dissatisfaction with the state government’s inaction. They reminded the public of Governor Otti’s promises made during his election campaign, where he vowed to clear all pension arrears left by his predecessors. However, many pensioners claim that little to no progress has been made since he took office.

An NUP spokesperson stated, “If the Governor has decided not to fulfill his promises to pay the pensions he inherited, he should be honest with the people of Abia.” This statement reflects the sentiments of countless pensioners who feel neglected and unheard.

In a bid to resolve these pension issues, a committee was established, comprising respected members such as Prof. Kenneth Kalu, Mazi Michael Akpara, and Dr. Betty Emeka Obasi. This committee was tasked with addressing the pension crisis and working toward a resolution that would benefit the retirees.

However, the union is now contesting a Memorandum of Understanding that emerged from this committee. The pensioners argue that the document falsely claims they agreed to waive their outstanding entitlements, including pensions and gratuities.

Chairman Elder Chukwuemeka Irondi has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the agreement. He alleges that Dr. Obasi requested the NUP to provide a letterhead with misleading information. Irondi emphasized that the state secretary signed the document without proper scrutiny, which raises questions about the validity of the agreement.

Irondi stated, “During a meeting held on January 11, 2024, Abia pensioners were pressured to endorse a false claim that they waived their rights to unpaid pensions and gratuities.” This coercion further highlights the struggles and frustrations faced by pensioners who feel they are being misrepresented.

In light of these developments, Irondi is urging Governor Otti to clarify his intentions regarding the promises made during his campaign. He emphasizes the importance of transparency and honesty in government dealings, especially concerning the welfare of vulnerable citizens like pensioners.

This situation is not new; Abia pensioners have a history of protesting against unpaid pensions and gratuities. Reports indicate that as of 2019, retirees were owed 32 months of arrears, a situation that has led to numerous demonstrations and public outcry over the years.
