The Kwara State Police Command has charged three police officers in court over the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student from Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin. The officers—Abiodun Kayode, James Emmanuel, and Oni Philip—were dismissed from their jobs after being linked to Ishola’s death.
On October 18, DSP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the police spokesperson, stated that the officers face charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide. They are currently held in prison while they await the next steps in the legal process.
Qoyum Ishola, a student in the Electrical/Electronics Engineering program, was shot during a protest against fuel price hikes in the Fate area of Ilorin on September 4, 2024. The incident caused public outrage, leading the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to move the case to the police headquarters in Abuja for further investigation.
This tragic event has raised concerns about police conduct and accountability in Nigeria, highlighting the need for justice for victims of police violence.
