Joint Health Sector Union Gives Tinubu Government 15 Days to Act on Demands

Public healthcare workers in Nigeria, under the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), are sounding the alarm as they give the government a 15-day ultimatum to address unresolved issues. If the government fails to meet their demands, they are prepared to go on strike again, which could significantly disrupt healthcare services across the country.

In June 2023, President Bola Tinubu assured JOHESU that he would intervene to resolve their concerns. However, despite this promise, the workers report that the government has not taken any substantial action to fulfill their requests. The ongoing dissatisfaction among healthcare workers has prompted this latest ultimatum, highlighting the urgent need for the government to prioritize healthcare issues.

The Joint Health Sector Union has outlined several critical demands that they believe need to be addressed immediately:

Healthcare workers who risked their lives during the pandemic are still awaiting payment for their Covid-19 hazard allowances. This compensation is essential for recognizing their efforts and sacrifices during a challenging time.

JOHESU is calling for tax exemptions on the allowances provided to healthcare workers. They argue that this measure is necessary to ensure that healthcare professionals receive fair compensation for their work.

The union is urging the government to halt its plans to establish a new regulatory agency for health facilities. They believe this agency could create unnecessary bureaucracy and complicate the provision of healthcare services.

JOHESU previously went on strike from May 19 to June 6, 2023, which severely affected healthcare services in public hospitals. During this time, many patients were left without necessary medical care, and the strike highlighted the critical role that healthcare workers play in the functioning of the health sector. The strike ended after President Tinubu’s promise to intervene, but the lack of follow-through has reignited tensions.

As the 15-day deadline approaches, the pressure on the government is mounting. JOHESU’s leaders have emphasized that if their demands are not met, they will have no choice but to embark on another strike. This situation is alarming, considering that healthcare services are already stretched thin and any additional disruption could have dire consequences for patients relying on public health services.

In a related development, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has also issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, seeking solutions to their ongoing issues. The simultaneous demands from both JOHESU and ASUU signal a broader discontent within Nigeria’s public sector, emphasizing the need for urgent action from the government.

The Joint Health Sector Union’s ultimatum to the Nigerian government reflects deep-seated frustrations within the healthcare system. With the deadline fast approaching, it remains to be seen how the government will respond. If they do not act swiftly to address the workers’ demands, another strike could lead to significant disruptions in healthcare services, affecting countless patients across Nigeria. It is essential for the government to prioritize these issues and work towards a resolution to ensure the well-being of both healthcare workers and the citizens they serve.
