Dismissed Police Officer Arrested for Impersonating a Sergeant in Akwa Ibom

In a notable case that has caught the attention of the public, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a dismissed police officer, Michael Effiong, for impersonating a serving police sergeant. This arrest took place on September 26, 2024, during a routine patrol conducted by the police along Stadium Road in Uyo.

The State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, shared details of the arrest during a press briefing. This marked one of the key incidents reported by the police command since Eribo assumed office on September 14, 2024.

According to reports, police officers on patrol noticed a man dressed in a police uniform and approached him for questioning. After some interrogation, it was discovered that the man was not an active police officer. His name was identified as CPL. Michael Effiong, a native of Nung Udoe in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area. Further investigations revealed that he was dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force in 2011, while serving in Abia State.

Effiong could not provide a valid explanation as to why he was still wearing a police uniform after his dismissal. This raised immediate concerns among the officers. A search was conducted, and it led to the discovery of a fake warrant card with the rank of Sergeant, three passport photos showing him in a corporal’s uniform, and other items linking him to impersonation.

Effiong’s dismissal from the police force in 2011 stemmed from misconduct during his time with the Abia State Command. However, despite being removed from duty over a decade ago, he continued to pose as a member of the Nigeria Police Force. His actions violated the law, as impersonating a police officer is a serious offense in Nigeria.

The Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has assured the public that the suspect will be charged to court to face justice for his actions. Effiong’s case will likely serve as a reminder of the strict penalties for impersonation and fraudulent activities, especially those involving law enforcement personnel.

This arrest is part of a larger effort by the Akwa Ibom Police Command to strengthen accountability within the force. Commissioner Eribo emphasized the importance of police officers performing their duties with integrity and fairness. He stated, “We shall not hesitate to reward any outstanding police officer or officers for doing a good job, while at the same time punishing the erring ones.”

The Commissioner also took the opportunity to address issues related to extortion and misconduct by officers. He made it clear that the police command will not tolerate any form of extortion or misuse of authority, urging officers to treat citizens with respect and fairness. Eribo stressed that justice must not only be served but also be seen as fair and transparent to the public.

Impersonation of law enforcement officers can have serious consequences, both for the individuals involved and for public trust in the police force. When dismissed officers or other unauthorized individuals wear police uniforms, it undermines the credibility of legitimate officers and can lead to public confusion or fear. It is also a crime that can be used to facilitate other unlawful activities, such as extortion or fraud.

The swift action taken by the Akwa Ibom Police Command in arresting Effiong demonstrates their commitment to maintaining order and integrity within the force. It also sends a strong message that the police are dedicated to rooting out misconduct, both from within their ranks and from outside individuals seeking to take advantage of the system.

The arrest of Michael Effiong for impersonating a police sergeant serves as a significant reminder that no one is above the law, and even former officers who break the rules will be held accountable. As the police continue to enforce discipline within their ranks, the public can be reassured that measures are being taken to uphold justice and maintain the trust between the police and the citizens they serve.

With this arrest, the Akwa Ibom Police Command has shown its dedication to weeding out misconduct, whether it comes from within or outside the force. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving police impersonation to the authorities.
