The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC), Peter Obi, has endorsed the position of the party’s national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, that support groups must not usurp the functions of the political party.

Obi also rejected the 59-member Presidential Campaign Council recently announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, popularly known as the OK Movement, amid an ongoing disagreement over the structure.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday, Obi addressed the dispute between the NDC and the movement over the campaign council announced on September 17.

The NDC had subsequently distanced itself from the council, stating that the party did not authorise its formation.

Obi, who is set to contest the 2027 presidential election on the NDC platform, said the OK Movement and other groups supporting the party’s presidential ticket should operate as support organisations rather than establish structures that replicate or perform the functions of the party.

He said the NDC remained the political party to which he and other members belonged, adding that he fully supported Dickson’s position on the matter.

“First is that the NDC is a political party we all belong to and I agree entirely with the position of the leader,” Obi said.
