Police blame speeding driver for deadly Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash

The Oyo State Police Command has blamed reckless driving and overspeeding for a serious road accident that involved several vehicles and pedestrians at Soka Junction in Ibadan.

The crash happened on Saturday night along the busy Ibadan–Lagos Expressway in Oluyole Local Government Area. Reports say two people died, while many others were injured. The incident caused fear among drivers and residents nearby.

In a statement released on Sunday, the police spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the accident occurred around 10:10 p.m.

He explained that early investigations showed that a white HOWO truck, with registration number Gombe GEM 696 XE and driven by Abdullahi Bashiru, lost control because of high speed and careless driving. The truck then crashed into other vehicles and people on the road.

The police confirmed that the accident involved many vehicles and pedestrians at Soka Junction on April 4, 2026, and sadly led to the death of two people, while others suffered different levels of injuries.

They also said several vehicles were damaged in the crash, including a Toyota Venza and a BMW, among others.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, sent his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.

He also assured the public that a full investigation is ongoing to understand exactly what happened and to make sure justice is done.

The police advised drivers to be careful, obey traffic rules, and avoid speeding to prevent such accidents in the future.

They also promised to continue protecting lives and property, and asked residents to support security agencies by sharing useful information when needed.
