Amnesty International has urged Nigerian authorities to quickly investigate the careless use of guns by the military that caused the death of a 14-year-old girl in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The incident happened on Saturday, April 4, when the teenager was hit by a stray bullet while inside her home. Reports say the bullet came from military personnel who were firing into the air during a wedding at a nearby event centre.
Amnesty International said the killing could have been prevented and must not go unpunished. The organisation emphasized that Nigerian authorities must look into the reckless use of firearms that led to the girl’s death.
A family friend said the girl was far from the celebration and lived with her family in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital quarters, happily applying henna for herself and her mother while preparing for a family wedding.
The girl was buried on Sunday morning in Maiduguri cemetery as her family and friends mourned her sudden loss.
Amnesty International highlighted that incidents like this show the dangers of careless or unlawful use of weapons, especially in civilian areas, and called for a fair and transparent investigation, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable.
