Trump signs executive order to regulate college sports

US President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order aimed at bringing more control to college sports. This move comes after recent changes allowed student-athletes to start earning money from their personal brand. The government believes the current system is becoming too chaotic and expensive for schools.

One of the main points in the order is a limit on how long athletes can compete. According to the directive, student-athletes should only be eligible to play for up to five years. It also introduces a more flexible transfer system, allowing athletes to change schools once without missing a season before they graduate.

The order asks the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to enforce these rules. Schools that do not follow them could risk losing federal funding. Trump explained that the lack of clear rules has created intense financial competition between universities, pushing many into debt.

The government is also concerned about how athletes are being paid. The order calls for stricter checks on financial deals, especially those seen as unfair or excessive. It also encourages Congress to create laws that will properly regulate the system across the country.

This decision follows a major ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States in 2021, which allowed student-athletes to earn money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). While this gave athletes more freedom, it also led to growing concerns about imbalance in college sports, especially between high-earning and smaller programs.
