2027: Deregister ADC, we don’t want ballot papers clustered – APC tells INEC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from the list of registered political parties. The request comes ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, made the appeal during a television interview. He argued that parties that fail to meet electoral performance standards should not remain on the ballot.

According to him, too many inactive or weak parties make ballot papers overcrowded and confusing for voters. He stressed the need for a cleaner and more organised electoral process.

Basiru maintained that the Nigerian Constitution empowers INEC to deregister parties that do not meet certain requirements. He insisted that the call is based on legal provisions, not political bias.

He also described the ADC as lacking real political strength, claiming it generates more noise than actual impact. He added that ongoing court cases also support the call for its deregistration.

The development highlights growing political tensions as parties begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, with debates over fairness, participation, and electoral reforms taking centre stage.
