MTN finalises separation of mobile money into standalone fintech in Ghana

MTN Group, one of Africa’s biggest telecom companies, has now separated its mobile money service in Ghana into a new independent fintech company. This step follows government rules and also supports MTN’s plan to grow its digital financial services.

The company announced that its Ghana branch, Scancom PLC, completed the process after getting approval from regulators. The update was shared through an official stock exchange platform.

This decision follows Ghana’s financial law, which says telecom companies must run financial services as separate businesses. MTN believes this move will help its mobile money service grow faster in Ghana.

MTN explained that the process involved merging its old mobile money company with a newly created fintech company. This was done according to Ghana’s company laws.

The company confirmed that the merger became official on March 31, 2026, after meeting all conditions and receiving full approval from regulators.

After the change, the new company now fully manages mobile money services, while MTN Ghana continues its normal telecom operations. MTN also said no new shares were created, and ownership structure remains the same.

The new fintech company is owned by MTN’s Dutch subsidiary and a special trust. This trust represents other investors, making sure they still benefit from the mobile money business.

MTN described this move as very important. It not only meets Ghana’s legal requirements but also supports the company’s long-term goal of growing its fintech business.

The company also highlighted how mobile money is becoming more important across its markets. These services now include payments, savings, loans, and business solutions.

The announcement was officially released on April 2, 2026, through a stock exchange platform that shares important company updates with investors.

MTN said this separation will help the mobile money business grow faster as a fintech company, while MTN Ghana focuses on providing telecom services.
