The Nigeria Ministry of Interior has raised concern over a large number of foreigners staying in the country beyond their visa validity.
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said about 848,000 foreign nationals are currently in Nigeria without valid visas.
He explained that the figures came from a new immigration monitoring system designed to track movements more accurately.
The minister warned that irregular migration can pose security risks and may expose individuals to exploitation or crime.
He also called for stronger international cooperation to ensure proper migration management and safe return of affected individuals.
Tunji-Ojo clarified that Nigeria will not accept foreign prisoners under any agreement and that migration deals apply only to Nigerian citizens.
